Alternative Skin Care

Hello, just want to ask if you guys know something to do or to use to shrink pores? My skin is a mix of oily/normal, I get a bit of break outs every now and then but what bothers me is that I get to have more whiteheads even after I used a facial scrub. Anyone know something to do about this? I'd be forever grateful. :)

Starting OCM [Jun. 16th, 2011|08:17 pm]
Alternative Skin Care

[Current Mood |optimisticoptimistic]

I don't have Castor Oil yet but I have three other oils - Grapeseed oil, Sunflower seed oil and Sweet Almond Oil. Is it alright to use any of the three oils (or combined) for OCM instead of CO? Or should I still get CO (it's alright for me anyway, I'm just wondering if the oils on hand would work).

I have sensitive, oily to combination skin, I use spf 50 sunscreen every morning and light makeup. I'm a bit tanned and it's humid and almost always hot where I am. I have a few acne and lots of blackheads and whiteheads on my nose and chin and I have visible pores.

Any kind of help and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Looking for new moisturizer [Apr. 22nd, 2011|10:43 pm]
Alternative Skin Care

Oil of Olay (sensitive skin + spf 15) is the facial moisturizer I've been using for a few years now, and while it's been the most satisfying thing I've tried on my face so far, it's still pretty disappointing.  I've also recently reviewed the ingredients and realized there are some things in there that I had thought there werent (maybe they were added?) and that I usually try to avoid in cosmetics.  The Trader Joe's version seems to have the same problems, although it also has fragrance and it's irritating my skin right now.

What can I use for an everyday moisturizer on my face that isn't full of iffy things?  (I don't just mean ~~"chemicals"~~, but needless preservatives, carcinogens, fragrances, and BS useless extract of whatever-this-year's-hot-superberry-is)  Keep it simple.

Something like Egyptian Magic sounds really appealing to me, with its short, practical and recognizable ingredient list, (Olive oil, beeswax, bee pollen, propolis, royal jelly, honey) but it also seems overly expensive, and I'd rather not take a $30 risk in that case that it doesn't work out.

I have sensitive skin that's prone to redness, mild adult acne, and I would prefer something with UV protection.  (Would something like this, without fragrance, work perhaps?)  Are there any small businesses that make simple moisturizers that fit the bill?

Please don't say "Oil Cleansing Method".  Been there, done that, not going back.

HELPP: dry, sensitive, eczema covered skin :( [Apr. 12th, 2011|01:31 am]
Alternative Skin Care

[Current Mood |aggravatedaggravated]

The lowdown: I have always struggled with chronic eczema problems. Three weeks ago I visited my family in Arizona and my skin suffered like never before, and having read No More Dirty Looks (a great book exposing the facts about skin products) on the airplane and already being a no-poo-er I decided to switch to cleaner, natural products as well as a more natural lifestyle. Unfortunately the first products I bought irritated my skin further (despite having all natural ingredients, idk) leaving me with face and arms covered in red, flaky, itchy skin.

I ended up switching to Aubrey Organics for sensitive skin, which I like, but though my skin has improved it is still uncomfortably tight, red, and flaky. I've been using a Shikai dry skin lotion on my arms which, again, I like, but they dont see much improvement. In addition to using these products I use grape seed oil as a base to my moisturizer, I've been drinking aloe liquid, adding a table spoon of ACV to my water twice a day, and taking fish oil capsules twice a day in addition to my multi-vitamin. I tried a homemade avocado mask but this stung my face so I washed it off a few minutes after applying it.

I really am desperate at this point... like I said I have seen improvement but not much. My face is extremely tight still... I can barely move my forehead and when I wake up my skin is so flaky I look like a freaking crypt keeper. Should I just keep at it and wait for slow improvement or is there anything anyone can recommend? I'm tired of being asked if I'm sunburn/what happened. I reallyyy don't want to give in and go to a dermatologist though.

Any suggestions??

Alternative Skin Care

Where can I find a comprehensive guide to what essential oils, carrier oils, butters, etc, are good for what. For example... which oils increase absorption of other oils... what oils are cleansing oils, what oils are good for this/that... etc... Basically, I'm just interested in learning as much as I possibly can about the properties of different oils and what each is particularly good for, what benefits they all give, etc. Preferably in a single, referenceable volume/file, etc.

I'll stop rambling, now. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

OCM Help [Mar. 25th, 2011|10:16 am]
Alternative Skin Care
I have had bad acne all of my life. When I was pregnant it flared like crazy. ProActiv was the only thing that worked and that wasn't all of the time. I tried ZenMed as well, then bought Chagrin Valley's neem and tea tree oil soap bar and their Squalane Face and Eye Mousse, but no success. I thought I'd try OCM and I've since realized how dry my skin was because it FEELS great! The only problem is the acne. I started about a month ago, using 50/50 EVOO/castor oil. A friend recommended I use jojoba oil to moisturize because it's more similar to the sebum our skin produces compared to using a dab of EVOO/CO. Not seeing much change in my acne I increased my ratio to 25/75 EVOO/castor oil. At this point I have small bumps all over my face and I've even got a couple of pimples on my neck. Before my acne was pretty focused on my chin but it's spreading. I started going through the posts in this and naturalliving, and found this one and someone linked http://www.zerozits.com/Articles/acnedetect.htm#inglist which lists ingredients and their comedogenicity and irritancy levels. Olive oil is listed as a 2 on comedogenicity, jojoba is a 0-2 on both comedogenicity and irritancy, castor oil is a 1 on comedogenicity and sunflower is a 0. and Having also been over on http://www.theoilcleansingmethod.com I noticed she used sunflower oil.

So, long story short, I switched to sunflower seed oil and castor oil, 50/50, a week ago. I'm not noticing much of a difference. I'm not using jojoba to moisturize, I'm using a small dab of my oil mix rubbed between my palms and patted all over my face.

Is there a detox period? How long should I wait between different oil mixes let alone different oil types? Companies like ProActiv and ZenMed say to give it a good 4 months to try but I suspect their opinions are highly profit driven so I don't know how accurate that statement is. I am also breastfeeding, so I know some of this is hormone related but it was not this bad post-pregnancy with my first child. I can handle a couple of zits but I see about 20 right now. I just want to find something that works that is pure. :(

Dry brushing [Mar. 18th, 2011|03:44 pm]
Alternative Skin Care

[Current Mood |curiouscurious]

I was looking through the beauty section of my natural foods store when I saw a dry skin brush. It sparked my curiosity and so now I'm trying to find out more about "dry brushing". Have any of you done this before? What was your experience with it?

OCM on body question [Feb. 20th, 2011|11:27 am]
Alternative Skin Care

I just started this program after hearing about it in no_poo. My skin was a nightmare, and I was willing to try anything.

Ok, the first night after using the OCM on my face, it was a dream. My face cleared overnight, and I'm so happy.

And it's only gotten better this past week. My question is about the neck and shoulder/back/chest region. I'm having a hard time with the washcloth staying put. My solution was to do one side at a time and lay on the opposite side. However, this is unwieldy and time consuming to do.

Are there any tips or tricks you have?

I also use a small squirt of castor oil and a larger one of jojoba oil. I don't measure, and usually I switch up the amounts depending on what my skin feels like. I also rub in coconut oil after, or any time during the day when my skin feels dry.

Alternative Skin Care

This may be one of those little un-educated questions that have an easy answer but I thought I'd ask anyway!

I have been using OCM successfully for a while now but I've only recently got a formula that pretty much works although I bought some coconut oil a few days ago and it puzzled me.

First off, I was expecting an OIL, not a solid, so I have no idea how to use it. I wanted to add it to my OCM mix but I'm not sure how or if it would solidify again? From what I read via google it seems that people say this is liquid in room temperature but I live in the UK and it's not warm here.
